Couples Therapy

Building a Stronger, More Connected Relationship

Every relationship experiences seasons of connection, conflict, transition, and growth. Couples therapy provides a safe, structured space to understand patterns that keep you stuck, strengthen communication, repair hurts, and develop a deeper sense of connection.

AtUndivided Heart Counseling, we use evidence-informed couples therapy approaches tailored to the unique needs of each relationship. Our clinicians work with couples navigating communication difficulties, recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, betrayal, life transitions, parenting challenges, and the impact of trauma or neurodivergence on the relationship.

Our goal isn't simply to help couples "fight better." We want to help you understand why you get stuck in the patterns you do and develop new ways of responding that create greater safety

, understanding, and connection.

The Gottman Method

The Gottman Method is one of the most well-known and extensively researched approaches to couples therapy. Developed from decades of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the approach helps couples understand relationship patterns and develop practical skills for creating a stronger, healthier partnership.

Gottman-informed therapy can help couples:

  • Improve communication and conflict management

  • Reduce destructive patterns of interaction

  • Increase friendship, fondness, and admiration

  • Strengthen emotional connection and intimacy

  • Navigate differences in needs, values, and expectations

  • Repair after conflict and rebuild trust

  • Create shared meaning and a stronger sense of partnership

Gottman Connect Assessment

For couples who would benefit from a more comprehensive understanding of their relationship, we may use the Gottman Connect assessment. This online assessment provides a detailed picture of important areas of the relationship, including friendship and intimacy, conflict, communication, shared values, and areas of strength and concern.

The assessment provides couples and their therapist with a helpful roadmap for identifying strengths to build upon and areas that may need additional attention.

Pamela is Level 2 Gottman Method trained, and all clinicians at Undivided Heart Counseling who utilize Gottman tools have training in the approach.

Couples Therapy Through an IFS Lens

Sometimes couples become caught in cycles where each person's protective responses activate the other person's. One partner withdraws, the other pursues. One becomes critical, the other becomes defensive. Over time, these patterns can feel almost impossible to stop—even when both people genuinely love each other.

Pamela also works with couples through an Internal Family Systems (IFS) lens, helping partners understand the different "parts" of themselves that show up within the relationship.

Rather than viewing these reactions as simply the problem, IFS helps couples develop curiosity about what may be underneath them. A defensive part may be protecting against rejection. An angry part may be protecting something that feels hurt, unseen, or afraid. A withdrawing part may be trying to prevent overwhelm or further conflict.

This approach can help couples move from:

"Why do you always do this to me?"

toward:

"What is happening inside of you right now, and what is this part of you trying to protect?"

By developing greater compassion for their own internal experiences and those of their partner, couples can begin to step out of reactive patterns and respond from a more grounded, connected place.

Pamela has advanced IFS training (Level 3) and integrates this perspective with other evidence-informed couples approaches.

Prepare/Enrich: Premarital & Early Marriage Counseling

Prepare/Enrich is an evidence-based relationship assessment and educational program designed to help couples identify strengths and potential areas of growth in their relationship.

We particularly recommend Prepare/Enrich for:‍

Engaged couples preparing for marriage

Dating couples who are seriously considering marriage

Couples in the first few years of marriage

Couples who want to intentionally build a strong foundation

The assessment explores important areas such as communication, conflict resolution, finances, intimacy, personality differences, family backgrounds, expectations, and relationship dynamics. Rather than simply identifying problems, Prepare/Enrich helps couples recognize existing strengths while providing practical areas for growth.

Pamela is a Prepare/Enrich Certified Facilitator and Trainer, and all clinicians at Undivided Heart Counseling use Prepare/Enrich with couples except Jennifer, who utilizes the similar SYMBIS program.

Specialized Support for Neurodivergent Couples

Relationships can become particularly complicated when one or both partners are neurodivergent. Differences in attention, executive functioning, sensory processing, emotional regulation, communication styles, routines, and expectations can sometimes leave both partners feeling misunderstood or unappreciated.

Pamela has specialized training in working with neurodivergent couples through The Couples Institute, as well as additional training with Ari Tuckman, PsyD, an ADHD expert, therapist, and author.

This perspective can be particularly helpful for couples navigating:

  • ADHD-related challenges in marriage

  • Executive functioning and follow-through

  • Emotional regulation and reactivity

  • Communication differences

  • Rejection sensitivity

  • Unequal household or mental-load responsibilities

  • Differences in sensory needs and intimacy

Rather than viewing these differences as evidence that one partner "doesn't care" or isn't trying hard enough, we work to understand what is actually happening beneath the conflict and develop strategies that work for both partners.

Christian Couples Counseling & Faith Integration

For couples who desire it, we integrate Christian faith and biblical principles into couples therapy. Faith can provide an important source of hope, meaning, forgiveness, and guidance as couples work through challenges.

Depending on your preferences, therapy may incorporate Scripture, prayer, and exploration of biblical principles related to love, grace, forgiveness, communication, marriage, and conflict. We can also address the impact of unhealthy religious beliefs or spiritual wounds on the relationship.

We recognize that every couple's faith journey is different. You don't have to choose between clinically sound couples therapy and your faith—we can thoughtfully integrate both.
